OPAL (online public access library) libri antichi è una risorsa digitale tematica, realizzata utilizzando il materiale antico a stampa posseduto dalla biblioteca. Conserva i principi base della biblioteca di pubblica lettura di impronta anglosassone, e cioè la disintermediazione, la gratuità, un sistema classificatorio per l’ordinamento dei testi a scaffale aperto, resi così fruibili direttamente all’utente in un contesto informatico open access. Per l’archiviazione dei full-text e dei metadati descrittivi si utilizza il software WCMS “Openshare”; le pagine di consultazione sono realizzate in ASP.

Opal funziona come biblioteca specialistica, conservando però le istanze (la mission) di public library, attraverso un moderno scaffale aperto elettronico. Nelle sezioni teatro e narrativa l’elenco dei testi dei due generi letterari si può ordinare per autore, titolo, anno di pubblicazione. Possono essere fatte altresì ricerche all’interno dei rispettivi campi anche per stampatore e luogo di pubblicazione. Nella sezione miscellanea l’ordinamento dei testi ha un filtro ulteriore che li raggruppa in (pochi) soggetti tramite un thesaurus disponibile in linea.

Esiste inoltre un bollettino novità degli inserimenti recenti per coloro che seguono periodicamente le novità del sito, mentre coloro che vogliono segnalare testi ed autori (presenti nella biblioteca) hanno la possibilità di farlo e, tra i servizi di Opal, c’è l’impegno di pubblicare le opere rare segnalate e possedute (fuori copyright ovviamente), per arrivare ad essere una risorsa interattiva e sperimentare un nuovo sistema di “document delivery”.

I metadati descrittivi hanno standard qualitativi citazionali: si rimanda a SBN per integrare gli elementi catalografici mancanti dell’edizione cartacea la cui copia fisica è linkata al full-text e, quindi, visibile anche attraverso l’OPAC di ateneo.

Le scansioni vengono realizzate con uno scanner piano a colori che, attraverso un convertitore di formato, le assembla come documenti PDF. Le immagini pubblicate non sono in formato testo e non vengono elaborate da un editor d’immagine: si presentano quindi con imperfezioni dovute, oltre alle condizioni del libro, al suo posizionamento durante la scansione, ad ombreggiature e deformazioni. Riteniamo che questo non infici la qualità grafica ed il risultato di stampa poichè la loro definizione è sufficientemente alta per consentire un’analisi filologicamente corretta dei testi.

Per visualizzare il full-text e sfogliare le pagine a video, o dopo avere scaricato il file sul proprio computer, è necessario aver installato il programma Adobe Acrobat Reader, disponibile gratuitamente sul Web.

OPAL libri antichi è linkabile liberamente da altre pagine web che vogliano utilizzare i documenti digitalizzati della biblioteca; si richiede cortesemente la citazione della fonte.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

OPAL (online public access library) libri antichi is a thematic digital resource based on the digitization of ancient books belonging to the library collections. It contains the basic Anglo-Saxon idea of “public library” into a website for free reading: easy-to-use (interface), free (web access), a subject system for the open shelf arrangement of the books, which makes them directly available to the users.

“Openshare” is the WCMS software used for storing files and descriptive metadata while web-pages are realized in ASP. OPAL works as a special collection library, retaining however the principles (the mission) of “public library”, through a modern electronic open shelf.

Books are divided in three main sections :“teatro” , “narrativa” and “miscellanea” and can be indexed by author, title, year of publication respectively. The retrieval system also allows the user to search inside the respective fields by typographer and place of publication. The section “miscellanea” is supplied with a further filter which groups the books into a selection of subjects through an on-line thesaurus.

A bulletin of the latest published items is provided for those who periodically follow OPAL news, while users who wish to have titles from the library fund digitized, have the opportunity to apply for that: among the services OPAL offers there is the intent to publish signalized rare books (out of copyright, obviously) on the OPAL website which therefore becomes an interactive resource reinventing the way to "document delivery”.

Citational qualitative standards are used for the descriptive metadata. SBN (Sistema Bibliotecario Nazionale) is the suggested Italian library system for librarians who want to improve defective cataloguing elements of the books.

Digital images are realized with a plain scanner which, through an Axis-format converter, assembles these as PDF-files. Digital images are not in text format and are not elaborated by a photo editor. For these reasons the result of the scanning process is far from perfect, due to the conditions of the book, its manual placing on the scanner-table glass, and image shadings and deformations. We believe that this does not jeopardize the graphic and print quality of the images as their definition is high enough to allow a correct philological analysis of the texts.

In order to download a single file, display the full text, turn over the pages or print them, users need the Adobe Acrobat reader freeware application installed on their computer. OPAL libri antichi can be freely linked by other websites. Source citation is kindly requested.
